Source: reddit-r-forhire

About the Role:

We are seeking an experienced book interior layout designer for a project lasting approximately 4 weeks. This is an iterative project, meaning the text will be subject to changes during the editing process.

Book Details:

  • Subject: Entrepreneurship, financial literacy, and life skills
  • Audience: Teens (approximately 12–17 years old)
  • Format: Illustrated nonfiction (text, illustrations, callouts, and "challenge" exercises)
  • Page Count: Approximately 250 pages, with roughly 65 illustrations (already completed, but open to iteration)

Compensation:

  • Rate: $60/hour (remote, USA)

Timeline:

  • Start Date: ASAP
  • Project Duration: Approximately 4 weeks

Responsibilities:

  • Create a strong interior layout sample for the front matter and Chapters 1–4.
  • Test the layout with the target audience and iterate based on feedback.
  • Roll the layout forward through Chapters 5–12.
  • Produce a full book that is print-ready (5.06" x 7.81") and ebook-ready (PDF + EPUB/Kindle-friendly).
  • Design a clean, modern, and highly readable interior that is both fun and professional.

Scope of Work:

  • Set up a clean InDesign template: trim, margins/gutters, page numbers, and running heads.
  • Handle typography (preferred Lexend, but open to others) and hierarchy, including grid/spacing rules.
  • Style components such as callout styles, "challenge" boxes, pull quotes, captions, and side notes.
  • Work smoothly with illustrations (placement, bleed/safe areas, and consistency).
  • Maintain a high level of detail (bleed, fonts, image resolution, and handling widows/orphans).
  • Produce exports: print-ready PDF and EPUB (or Kindle-friendly).

Tools:

  • Adobe InDesign is strongly preferred.
  • The client will provide manuscript drafts, illustration assets, and any brand direction.

To Apply:

Please send a direct message (DM) with the following:

  1. Portfolio link (2–4 interior samples preferred)
  2. A brief note on your experience with print and EPUB
  3. Your availability over the next 4–6 weeks
  4. Confirmation that you are comfortable with an iterative workflow (text changes)
