About the Role
My son recently graduated with a CS degree and just started his first developer job. He is doing well, but I believe he would benefit significantly from having an experienced professional in his corner—someone who can walk him through the nuances learned only through years of industry experience. I am looking to hire a mentor to provide guidance that I currently do not have the bandwidth to provide myself.
This is a paid, part-time position, functioning more like a tutor than a traditional job.
Responsibilities
The role involves regular 1:1 video calls covering:
- Code review and constructive feedback.
- Real-world problem solving: Discussing specific bugs that were difficult to track down or design decisions that did not hold up over time.
- Architecture guidance: Explaining not just how to build something, but the "why" behind it and how to evaluate trade-offs.
- Career support: Occasional assistance with resume building and interview preparation (though the primary focus remains technical).
Requirements
- Strong communication skills: Must be patient and capable of explaining complex concepts clearly. This is as important as technical depth.
- Experience: 4+ years of hands-on software engineering experience.
- Technical Proficiency: Comfortable working in at least two object-oriented languages.
- Practical Judgment: Ability to share real stories and lessons learned from building (and breaking) software systems.
- Architecture: A solid grasp of software architecture and the reasoning behind design decisions.
- Education: A CS degree or equivalent is preferred, but not a hard requirement if other qualifications are met.
Compensation and Details
