Job Title: Product/Industrial Designer (Wearable Device)
Source: reddit-r-forhire
About the Role
I am the co-founder of an early-stage company building a small consumer wearable device that pairs with a mobile app. We are pre-launch and keeping the specific function under wraps for now; a full brief will be provided over DM. The scope is well-defined and covers three connected workstreams: the PCB, the housing, and the strap.
Responsibilities
PCB / Electronics
- Board design around a defined component/sensor set, sized to a wearable form factor.
- Schematic and layout, power/battery considerations, and antenna placement for wireless.
- Output ready for a contract manufacturer / assembly house.
Housing / Enclosure
- Form development: sketch → CAD → refined direction.
- CMF (colour, material, finish) for a premium consumer-grade feel.
- DFM: wall thickness, draft, snap-fits vs. fasteners, tolerances, and parting lines—suitable for injection moulding at modest initial volumes.
- Sealing/ingress considerations appropriate for an on-body device.
Strap
- Strap/band design and attachment mechanism.
- Material and comfort for all-day wear against skin (and the manufacturing route for it).
- Sizing/fit range.
General Deliverables
- Production-ready CAD and technical drawings to hand to a manufacturer.
- Photoreal renders for pitch decks and early marketing.
Requirements
- Industrial/Product Design: Experience with physical products taken to manufacture (ideally wearables or small worn/handheld electronics).
- CAD Fluency: Fusion 360, SolidWorks, or Rhino.
- Strong DFM: Injection moulding, material selection, assembly, and soft-goods/strap manufacturing.
- PCB Design: Capability to handle PCB design (or a partnership with an EE—please specify).
- Rendering: Proficiency in KeyShot or equivalent.
Bonus Skills:
- Ingress/sealing expertise.
- Battery integration.
- Antenna-aware layout.
- Prior work with overseas contract manufacturers.
Note: I am open to one person who can span all of this, or a tight individual + collaborator setup. Please be upfront about what you cover yourself so I can build the collaborating team accordingly.
Logistics & Compensation
- Location: Remote.
- Type: Freelance/contract to start with ongoing potential.
- Budget: $10,000 (paid on a milestone basis).
- Timezone: Gulf timezone (flexible).
