About garden3d

We are a worker-owned creative collective, innovating on everything from brands and IRL communities to IoT devices and cross-platform apps. We share profit, open source everything, spin out new businesses, and invest in exciting ideas through financial and/or in-kind contributions.

Our client roster includes Google, Stripe, Figma, Hinge, Black Socialists in America, ACLU, Pratt, Parsons, Mozilla, The Nobel Prize, MIT, Gnosis, Etsy, and Gagosian.

We’re the software team behind innovative products like The Light Phone and Mill, and we operate a global, decentralized community space collective called Index Space.

Our Verticals

  • Sanctuary Computer (Development): Prioritizes close collaboration between the client and the craftsperson.
  • XXIX (Design): A design studio that values autonomy, growth, transparency, and shared responsibility.
  • Index Space (Community): A network of physical spaces providing space for the exchange of knowledge and tools.
  • garden3d TK (Media): An experimental media company exploring emerging themes in technology, design, and culture.

The Head of Marketing & Communications Role

The garden3d Head of Marketing & Communications has one mandate: make sure everything we put on the internet is compelling and interesting. Working in close partnership with our founder & president Hugh Francis, this person decides what we make, where it runs, and whether it clears our bar.

You can be based anywhere. While we have a presence in New York, we work across time zones and are happy to hire in Europe, Singapore, Chicago, or elsewhere.

Responsibilities & Mandates

  • Quality Control: Maintain a standard of 8/10 or higher across every post, video, essay, and episode.
  • Social Media: Create content that stops the scroll, with a focus on short-form video.
  • Brand Voice: Manage messaging for a house of brands (Sanctuary, XXIX, Index, etc.), keeping each tone distinct.
  • Case Study Production: Own the production line for case studies that win each studio its next project.
  • Website Strategy: Own the strategy and content for all garden3d websites.
  • Editorial Ownership: Run the garden3d Substack, podcast, and transparency publications.
  • Production & Distribution: Direct producers and freelancers; manage paid spend on Meta/Instagram with a focus on ROI.
  • Data-Driven Reporting: Measure audience growth, engagement, and pipeline influence.
  • Presence IRL: Represent garden3d at events, conferences, and community programming.
  • Culture: Model values of partnership, curiosity, and accountability.

Special Projects

  • Turning garden3d TK into a real experimental media brand (books, screenplays, music).
  • Growing our podcast into a property with its own audience.
  • Launching campaigns for new Index spaces and USB Club drops.
  • Making our annual open-source P&L release a media moment.
  • Standing up a small content studio to serve all four studios.

Qualifications

Must have:

  • 8+ years in marketing, content, or brand leadership.
  • A portfolio proving exceptional taste.
  • Design background or fluency in Figma.
  • Experience owning a company's web presence and strategy.
  • Exceptional project management skills.
  • Short-form video fluency (Reels, TikTok, Shorts).
  • Experience managing creatives, producers, and freelancers.
  • Hands-on experience running paid social (Meta/Instagram) and managing budgets.
  • Working fluency in the PESO model.

Nice-to-have:

  • Experience producing IRL events and conferences.
  • Podcast or audio production experience.
  • Newsletter growth experience (Substack).
  • Photography, motion, or editing skills.
  • Fluency with AI production tools.
  • Experience marketing to design & engineering decision-makers.

Compensation

  • This role begins with a 4-month fraction trial contract.
  • Pay: $75 - $120 p/hr, pending seniority and experience.
  • After a successful trial, we will shape a permanent role.
  • After 12–24 months of proven success, this individual becomes eligible to join our worker ownership program.

How We Work

  • Transparency & Ownership: We release our P&L statements and open-source our best ideas.
  • 150% Carbon Negative: We are certified climate neutral and prioritize moral standards in the work we accept.
  • Async & Decentralized: We prioritize calm, thoughtful communication.
  • Remote Friendly: We are fluent in remote work.
