The Role
The Operator position is for new hires with significant related experience or significant technical education in related fields. The Operator shall have the ability to gain a thorough understanding of the process, including knowledge of the mechanical and electrical systems at the plant. The Plant Operator is responsible for carrying out basic operations and maintenance tasks throughout the facility, including monitoring and oversight, starting and stopping equipment, troubleshooting, and decision-making on minor process changes.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Take shifts of full responsibility for monitoring plant operations as directed.
- Start and stop equipment as necessary.
- Make adjustments to the process as necessary.
- Use daily checklists to accurately record plant data, flows, pressures, and other measurements.
- Make daily observations of equipment and processes to ensure safe operation (checking for leaks, unusual vibrations, sounds, smells, or temperatures).
- Report improper working equipment or unsafe situations to the supervisor and document in IFS or KPA.
- Replace consumable products such as filter elements and chemicals.
- Complete company-provided training in environmental health and safety and comply with safe working practices.
- Perform general plant maintenance, including cleaning, painting, landscaping, and other manual labor.
- Engage in preventive and corrective maintenance, including mechanical or electrical tasks.
- Monitor inventory and report low stock to the Plant Manager.
- Maintain a positive, professional, and customer-service-oriented attitude.
Required Attributes
- Alarm Response: Gain trust to respond to, clear, and reset basic alarms while unsupervised.
- Troubleshooting Abilities: Develop systematic skills to address process, electrical, and mechanical issues.
- HMI Competence: Learn full HMI functionality for system start-ups, shutdowns, and process adjustments.
- Supervision & Quality: Ability to complete learned tasks without step-by-step supervision; focus on high-quality results.
- Communication: Effectively communicate process or equipment problems and utilize equipment tagging systems.
- Initiative: Self-motivated approach to training, learning, and task prioritization.
- Interpersonal Skills: Ability to work under the direction of Senior Operators and Management.
- Conceptual Knowledge: Analyze data and recognize parameters outside of typical ranges.
- Flexibility: Ability to fill in for team members to cover vacations, PTO, holidays, and emergencies.
Qualifications and Requirements
- Must gain an understanding of the RO process and related supporting processes.
- Must gain a thorough understanding of mechanical and electrical equipment and how to safely repair/maintain it.
- Must meet physical requirements: lifting, standing, crawling, squatting, and working on ladders/scaffolding.
- Must maintain professional hygiene and wear required PPE (steel-toe shoes, safety glasses, hard hat, etc.).
- Must maintain a clear criminal background.
- Must be available for varied work shifts, including occasional nights and emergency callouts.
- Must be proficient with hand and power tools.
- Must be prompt, punctual, and reliable.
- Must adhere to drug-free workplace and workplace violence prevention policies.
Education and Experience
- Preferred: Associate or bachelor's degree in a field that prepares a candidate for industrial operations or seawater desalination.
- Alternative: Completed primary education with 2-3 years of experience in reverse osmosis or closely related fields.
- Strong preference for candidates with experience in electrical, piping, or mechanical disciplines.
- Experience in industrial process operations is desirable (e.g., industrial facilities, vehicles, or marine industry).
