Engineering Manager

Location: Remote (North America)
Compensation: $180k–$230k
Source: Hacker News

About the Role

The team has grown fast and organically, resulting in a group of talented engineers without a shared process. This role is responsible for transforming that into a scalable, high-throughput organization. You will report to the VP of Engineering (who owns architecture and vision) while you own execution, delivery, and people management for approximately 10 distributed engineers located across the US, Canada, EU, UK, and China.

This is a ~90% people management role and is not a player-coach position.

Responsibilities

  • Own sprint commitments and release cycles.
  • Conduct 1:1s and provide coaching to team members.
  • Remove cross-team roadblocks.
  • Own incident response and on-call processes.
  • Track and improve DORA metrics.
  • Maintain a high performance bar: hold direct conversations regarding underperformance, utilize PIPs when necessary, and manage exits while maintaining a kind and caring culture.

Requirements

  • Experience: 2+ years of experience directly managing ~10-person engineering teams.
  • Environment: Experience working in distributed/async environments.
  • Technical Proficiency: Strong enough technically to run code reviews and push back on estimates (though you will not be coding day-to-day).
  • Track Record: Proven history of raising delivery throughput at a high-growth company.
  • Availability: Must overlap ~6 hours with US Eastern time (9am–4pm ET).

Nice to Have

  • Big-company process background (e.g., Google, Meta, Salesforce) combined with startup speed.
  • Domain exposure in logistics, supply chain, or e-commerce.
