About Fastly

Fastly helps people stay better connected with the things they love. Fastly’s edge cloud platform enables customers to create great digital experiences quickly, securely, and reliably by processing, serving, and securing our customers’ applications as close to their end-users as possible — at the edge of the Internet. The platform is designed to take advantage of the modern internet, to be programmable, and to support agile software development. Fastly’s customers include many of the world’s most prominent companies, including GitHub, Yelp, Paramount, and JetBlue.

We're building a more trustworthy Internet. Come join us.

The Role

Fastly’s Technical Operations (TechOps) team is responsible for building & operating the infrastructure that powers the Fastly Edge Cloud Platform. We oversee an extensive global network that spans 6 continents with over 100 points of presence and 578 Tbps of connected capacity. Our platform serves a significant portion of the content delivered to internet consumers across the planet.

We’re looking for an experienced SRE with a strong focus on Networks, SRE principles, and knowledge of the internet who can bring engineering best practices, operational rigour, and automation skills to help craft the future of Fastly’s network.

What You'll Do

  • Build, operate, and maintain the continually growing global network footprint of Fastly’s Edge Cloud Platform.
  • Respond to significant traffic incidents and lead network incidents, resolving edge cases and failure scenarios with your expertise in IP routing, particularly BGP.
  • Write code that is performant, maintainable, clear, and concise and contribute to code reviews, improving the codebase and other team processes.
  • Partner in the development and iteration of tools and automation systems that improve how we operate and build the network.
  • Innovate new methods for monitoring network performance, focusing on the end-user experience, and proactively address potential issues.
  • Conduct continual deep-dives of performance-based analytics and maintain close involvement with partner teams to maintain a performant global network.
  • Advocate for the operational stability of the network by identifying opportunities and partnering with engineering teams to shape their roadmaps and software solutions.
  • Mentor team members on the complexities of global routing, especially in an anycast-heavy environment.

What We're Looking For

  • Experience in the protocols and practices that make up the fabric of the global internet, including TCP/IP, BGP, Anycast and DNS.
  • Experience in automation and coding using languages like Python, or similar.
  • Proficiency in Tier 1 Internet service providers, Internet exchanges and cloud providers.
  • Ability to analyze internet traffic patterns across multiple dimensions using flow-based tools.
  • Experience working with alerting, monitoring and visibility tools (such as Graphite/Grafana, Prometheus, or Splunk).
  • Knowledge across cloud hosting solutions (i.e., GCP, AWS and Azure).
  • Knowledge of DevOps practices and CI/CD pipelines (i.e., Git, Jenkins, Ansible).
  • Understanding of Linux/Unix systems administration and network stack optimisation.
  • Adept at knowledge sharing and creating comprehensive documentation to empower teams.
  • Able to collaborate with cross-functional teams to shape the technical roadmap, prioritizing initiatives to optimize automation tooling and the network.

Bonus Points

  • Experience writing production-level code using VCL or GO.
  • Experience in network telemetry including instrumenting infrastructure and collecting, processing, storing and analyzing data.
  • Experience working with geographically dispersed teams: previous remote work preferred.

Work Hours & Location

  • Hours: 08:00 - 17:00. This position requires availability during core business hours and may require occasional nights and weekends for on-call coverage.
  • Location: This position has one opening and can be hired in London (Hybrid) or UK Remote.
  • Travel: May require travel as required by your role or requested by your manager.

We offer a comprehensive benefits package designed to meet your needs. Our offerings may vary depending on the country where you work and are subject to change.
