Two weeks ago the company I spent 4 years building shut down. Ran out of runway. That's the second time I've been part of an early team that didn't make it.
First one was a fintech where I built payment infrastructure from scratch. Second one was a B2B marketplace where I was the 10th engineering hire and watched it grow to 80 engineers, 4 million users, 20k daily orders.
Some real things I built along the way.
* Shipped a production AI procurement system that did autonomous supplier discovery, negotiation, and catalog expansion on the marketplace.
* Scaled the API layer from 3,500 to 21,000 concurrent users with an 89% latency improvement. Took it from 1,200ms down to 130ms. Sustained 3,300 requests per second at peak using Redis warm up, materialized views, and connection pooling.
* Cut AWS spend from $6,400 to $1,000 a month by reducing overheads, consolidated microservices into monorepo and right sized compute.
* Broke down a huge JS monolith into TS microservices as the team grew from 10 to 80. Built a shared Node.js SDK that 7 services adopted. Built geospatial infrastructure using Uber H3 indexing for delivery zones and seller clustering. Created a dynamic pricing engine for real time adjustments based on demand and inventory. Architected a multi currency cross border ledger with bank integrations and OAuth 2.0 flows and webhooks.
* Led a team of 4 engineers through 6 revenue critical features. Took 40 plus interviews as we scaled.
