About the Role
You'll transform press releases and municipal council agendas into engaging, readable news stories for our community audience. This isn't simple copy-paste work - we need someone who can identify the newsworthy angles, write compelling ledes, and craft stories that serve our readers.
What You'll Do
- Rewrite press releases into proper news articles (removing promotional language, finding the real story)
- Convert council agenda items and meeting minutes into accessible community news
- Maintain AP/Canadian Press style standards
- Work independently with minimal supervision once trained
Requirements
- Journalism experience (education, internships, or professional work)
- Strong English writing skills with news writing fundamentals
- Understanding of what makes information newsworthy
- Ability to write clear, concise stories for general audiences
- Reliable internet connection for remote work
Preferred
- Experience with local government/municipal reporting
- Familiarity with Canadian or North American news style
- Self-starter who can manage workflow independently
