Position Overview

DrFirst is hiring a Senior Software Engineer for the eRx Enterprise and Gadget team. Your first focus is Gadget, our pharmacy agent. Over time you will extend your work into Rcopia, our ePrescribing platform, on Electronic Prescribing of Controlled Substances (EPCS) and Prescription Drug Monitoring Program (PDMP) workflows.

You will build cloud native, high performance services for an ePrescribing collaboration platform. The platform connects providers, patients, payers, pharmacies, and pharmaceutical companies in real time. You will design systems built for high load, with self healing, auto scaling, and full observability.

You bring strong judgment about AI. You know when AI speeds up delivery and when AI produces weak code. You apply AI to raise code quality, performance, and design standards across the team, and you solve real problems for the pharmacies and prescribers who rely on our platform.

What You Will Work On

  • Build and improve Gadget, the DrFirst pharmacy agent, from design through production.
  • Contribute to Rcopia EPCS and PDMP capabilities as the team roadmap expands.
  • Design, develop, test, deploy, and maintain secure, scalable Java integration solutions.
  • Build cloud native microservices on AWS with auto scaling, fault tolerance, high availability, and self healing.
  • Develop and maintain integrations with major EHR platforms, including athenaOne, Epic, Oracle Health, Greenway, AdvancedMD, eMDs, and ModMed, using HL7, FHIR, web services, APIs, and Mirth Connect.
  • Build and maintain event driven architectures with Apache Kafka for reliable, efficient service communication.
  • Deliver high throughput and low latency across large, distributed platforms.
  • Partner with DevOps on CI/CD pipelines that automate testing, deployment, and monitoring.
  • Design AI powered automation frameworks for faster development cycles and automated regression testing.
  • Decide where AI adds value in the codebase and where human design must lead. Set review standards for AI assisted code.
  • Monitor, diagnose, and resolve performance issues with observability tools and logs.
  • Follow and enforce secure coding practices. Take part in security audits and reviews.
  • Lead code reviews, mentor junior developers, and contribute to architecture decisions.
  • Track industry trends and improve system performance, resilience, and developer productivity.

Qualifications

Required

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related discipline.
  • 5+ years of hands on Java development with deep knowledge of object oriented design and the Spring Framework, including Spring Boot and Spring Cloud.
  • 3+ years designing and building cloud native applications on AWS, including S3, Valkey, Lambda, RDS, and EKS or ECS.
  • 3+ years with distributed messaging systems such as Apache Kafka, with a solid grasp of event streaming.
  • Proven record building and integrating large scale, high performance, distributed systems with fault tolerance, scalability, and low latency.
  • AI first mindset, with daily hands on use of AI tools such as Claude and GitHub Copilot for coding, testing, debugging, and documentation.
  • Clear judgment on when and where AI improves engineering outcomes, and a record of keeping AI generated code from lowering quality, performance, or design.
  • Proficiency building and consuming RESTful APIs with JSON and XML.
  • Strong experience with relational or NoSQL databases, including schema design, performance tuning, and query optimization.
  • Hands on experience with CI/CD pipelines and tools such as GitLab CI and Jenkins.
  • Solid knowledge of application and data security, including authentication, authorization, and data protection.
  • Self motivated. You work well on your own in a fast paced, agile environment.
  • Fast learner who adapts to new technologies, teams, and environments.
  • Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills with a proactive, solution oriented approach.

Preferred

  • Experience building AI agents, LLM integrations, or agentic workflows in production.
  • Experience with large scale, mission critical systems in finance, brokerage, trading, or credit card processing, especially systems requiring low latency, high throughput, and high availability.
  • Experience with ePrescribing, EPCS, PDMP, NCPDP SCRIPT, or pharmacy systems.
  • Familiarity with front end technologies (HTML, CSS, JavaScript).

Physical Requirements

  • Primarily desk work in a remote, U.S. based setting.
  • Extended periods of computer use.
