Senior Scientific Computing Engineer - Spanish National Cancer Research Centre (CNIO)

Location: Madrid, Spain (Hybrid)
Type: Full-time
Source: Hacker News

About the Role

CNIO is one of Europe's leading cancer research centres. We are looking for a Senior Scientific Computing Engineer to join the IT, Scientific Computing, and AI area. You will take ownership of the infrastructure behind our research, ranging from genomics pipelines to AI models. As the senior scientific computing lead in the area, you will report directly to the area head and help define the future direction of scientific computing at CNIO.

Responsibilities

  • Shape the roadmap for scientific computing at the centre and drive it forward.
  • Own and evolve our HPC cluster (Slurm): including scheduling, monitoring, capacity planning, and user support.
  • Build out our GPU / AI infrastructure as the centre's ML workloads grow.
  • Work with researchers to turn their analyses into robust, reproducible pipelines and tools.
  • Optional: Opportunity to co-author research papers.

Requirements

  • Several years of experience running Linux HPC environments in production (Slurm or similar).
  • Comfortable with automation (Ansible, Python), containers (Apptainer/Docker), and workflow managers (Nextflow, Snakemake or similar).
  • A proactive mindset: someone who wants to set direction, not just keep the lights on.
  • Bonus Skills: Ceph, Kubernetes, GPU stacks, and a bioinformatics background.
  • Language: Spanish is not required.
