About the Project

I am looking for one illustrator to create cover art for all six books in a dark romance series. The publication target is early 2027. I aim to secure the right artist this summer, with all six covers completed by late fall and a hard deadline of early 2027.

The Concept

Each cover features a single hand (or pair of hands) holding, wearing, or releasing a small silver key on a chain. The hand changes across the six books—representing different characters, gestures, and emotional weights. Think of these as character portraits where the hand is the portrait.

The Style

• High-contrast illustration on black backgrounds.
• Luminous white/porcelain rendering (not naturalistic flesh tones or grayscale realism).
• Limited color palette: The only color is the silver of the chain/key and one nail polish accent per hand. Everything else is black and white.
• Aesthetic: Similar to Sin City’s selective color approach, but quieter, more refined, and not comic-book style.

Visual Consistency

Because the hands belong to recurring characters, visual consistency is the primary design strategy. One character's hand appears in four of the six covers and must read as the same hand aging through the story. This is one cohesive body of work, not six separate commissions.

What is Provided

I have detailed per-book briefs ready, including:

• Hand position, chain/key staging, and nail accent colors.
• Composition notes and character context.
• Background adaptation specs for dark romance shelf visibility.
• Typography direction.

Requirements

• Strong hand anatomy: This is non-negotiable. If hands are not a strength, this is not the project for you.
• Character focus: Willingness to engage with specific briefs regarding posture, condition, and personality.
• Availability: Must be available to start in fall 2026 and deliver through early 2027.

Ownership and Terms

• Full copyright transfer: The finished cover art becomes my property. I require complete ownership of the illustrations, not a usage license. Please price your quote accordingly.

Compensation

• Budget: Starts at $150/cover and scales with portfolio match and experience.
• Please provide your per-cover rate or total series rate.

Process

1. Portfolio Review: I will review portfolios from responses.
2. Briefing: If your work is a fit, I will send the full series overview and one per-book brief.
3. Trial Sketch: Before committing to all six, I will commission a single paid rough sketch to ensure alignment. If we move forward, this sketch will serve as the foundation for the final cover.
